Going green literally has taken on a new role! Now, future applications could be on top of our homes. Rooftops have been evolving in different ways to produce energy from solar panels. Wind energy has also been growing tremendously with wind turbines. The latest scientific study s using artificial grass on top of roofs to harness renewable wind energy.
How does it work?
According to New Scientist, the concept is to install artificial grass like blades to cover a rooftop, and each individual grass blade acting like a tiny wind turbine. This wind energy will then generate power to the home or business underneath. Each plastic blade of grass will also have nanowires on one side and indium tin oxide on the other. As the blades of plastic grass blow in the wind, they rub together passing electrons therefore making an electric current.
Harvests energy blowing in any direction
The scientists at Southwest Jiaotong Univeristy in China and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta have only tested their model rooftop in a lab. Yang stated, “Compared with a wind turbine, our triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is effective at harvesting the energy from natural wind blowing in any direction.”
While the scientists are still in the early stages of their development, maybe one day in the future our own rooftops will be covered in artificial grass creating a renewable source of wind energy to power our homes.
